CRISP George (Barber)

A poem published in the Gnowangerup Star, 30 January 1932

“A wag walked down Gnowangerup Street
His hair was long and limp.
He posted his mail at the GPO.
Said he to himself “I’ll have a drink”.
He passed by Georgie Dobson standing at his door,
With a beaming smile upon his face as in the days of yore.

Says the visitor to the township ”It’s time I had a trim”.
He dashed across to the barbers, but found he was not in.
He rapped up on the door post, he hammered with his fist,
He was met by a bird with a billiard cue; said he: “Do you want George Crisp”?

George Crisp, the speedy Barber, is the man that I require; at haircutting, shaving, shampooing, he is a regular flyer.
"The Doc has got the barber”, said the cove with the billiard cue,
"He’s got him up at the doctors shop”, he said, “I thought you knew”.

The wag he wanted his hair off, also a nice clean shave,
So he hived around to Albert Pratt, the plumber of the town,
The fitter of electric light and the works of renown.
With many thanks to the plumber for the trouble he did take,
And he led him around to his bathroom and then he had a scrape.

The same wag four weeks later was strolling down the street,
George Crisp the barber was the first man he did meet.
He was hurrying Gnowangerup Street
At the gate both smart and quick;
He had a gentle smile upon his face and a pile of towels upon his mitt.
"I’m pleased to see you Georgey, at your biz again,
With that pleasant smile upon your face you’ve lost that look of pain

Tom Brade was best friends with George Crisp’s son ‘Tiny’ Crisp.

Frances Harvey: my grandparents George and Alice Crisp had the Barbers. They had 7 kids Gerald, Gladys, Ted, Roy (my dad) Else, Eric and Ron.
